Electronic Design Engineer – Galway

Are you passionate about developing cutting-edge medical technology with life-saving potential? My client is seeking a highly motivated Electronic Design Engineer to join a growing R&D team in Galway. This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in the development of an innovative medical device, contributing to both design and manufacturing advancements.

About the Role

As an early hire in a rapidly expanding start-up, you will play a key role in defining and optimising the electrical systems for a revolutionary wearable medical device. You will work on PCB design, power management, signal acquisition and system validation—ensuring a seamless transition from clinical development to commercial release. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, high-impact environment.

What You Will Do

  • Design and optimise the electrical architecture for wearable medical devices, integrating sensors, microcontrollers and power management circuits.
  • Develop and validate PCB layouts for performance, manufacturability, and reliability in low-power, compact systems.
  • Conduct circuit analysis, system testing and validation to meet medical device standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Implement and optimise power management strategies, signal acquisition methods and communication protocols (e.g., WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular).
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues across electrical subsystems from prototyping through production.
  • Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, and clinical teams to ensure seamless hardware integration.
  • Maintain detailed documentation, including schematics, test procedures, and compliance reports.
  • Contribute to next-generation device development with expanded sensor capabilities and enhanced functionality.

What You Need

  • A degree in Electronic Engineering (or similar).
  • 5+ years of experience in hardware design for embedded systems, including PCB layout and circuit analysis.
  • Strong expertise in low-power design, power management, and battery-operated systems.
  • Experience designing for manufacturability and reliability, including PCB fabrication and assembly.
  • Proficiency in circuit simulation, PCB design, and hardware testing tools (e.g., KiCAD, SPICE, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers).
  • Familiarity with hardware interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, ADCs, and DACs.
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and regulatory standards for medical or other regulated devices.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and experience resolving hardware issues during prototyping and production.
  • Excellent collaboration skills, working across firmware, mechanical, and clinical teams.
  • Fluent in English, with strong technical documentation abilities.

Bonus Skills (Preferred but Not Required)

  • Experience in wearable medical devices or portable, low-power systems.
  • Background in biomedical signal acquisition (e.g., ECG).
  • Expertise in high-frequency signal integrity, thermal design, and EMI mitigation.
  • Working knowledge of C/C++ for embedded MCUs (Nordic, STM, Microchip, ESP32).

Why Join Us?

  • Work on groundbreaking medical technology with real-world impact.
  • Be part of a fast-growing start-up at the forefront of innovation.
  • Gain hands-on experience in medical device development and commercialization.
  • Enjoy a collaborative and dynamic work environment where your contributions truly matter.
